Touchstone Early Years

A contemporary course for preschool teachers

The first few years of a child’s life are globally acknowledged to be the most critical years for life-long development. Research indicates that the quality of the curriculum used for early childhood education and the kind of training teachers receive as early childhood educators have direct implications when it comes to ensuring the learning conditions for children. However, it is found that in India, preschool education is largely a downward extension of primary education curriculum, with teachers often having no early childhood education training. The Teacher Foundation has designed Touchstone Early Years, a comprehensive training programme for preschool teachers, to address this concern.

Touchstone Early Years is a 6 to 7 month course, with 11 interactive workshops and two rounds of one-on-one school based support. The topics covered in the workshop will equip teachers with an awareness of the ages and stages of development, with strategies to teach early language, number sense and knowledge of the world.

How the school benefits?

Touchstone Early Years is specifically designed to inspire and empower Pre-Primary School Teachers with the essential know-how and various innovative teaching and learning materials, that will go a long way in enabling them to nurture the child’s creativity whilst equipping their young learners with basic skills and competencies. Touchstone Early Years focuses on benefiting the institution rather than the individual; impacting the teaching-learning system rather than encouraging sporadic strategies. It ensures that the education provided in the school for pre-school children is not an extension of the primary school system.

School Based Support (SBS)

School-based support involves every teacher being observed twice in the course of the project. During the classroom observations, TTF facilitators will look for/examine teacher-student interaction, teaching-learning methodology, assessment practices and the physical classroom environment. Every teacher will be given one-on-one feedback, post observation. This will enable the teachers to reflect on their existing practices and explore more impactful approaches. After each round of SBS, the school will be given a qualitative and quantitative report highlighting the strengths and areas for further improvement in the school’s classroom practice.

On average, a teacher teaches at least forty children every year. Over a 25 year career, that is one thousand children. That means, when we enable and inspire ONE teacher, we touch over ONE THOUSAND lives. So contribute to ONE teacher’s training and touch the lives of a thousand children!
