“Do you want a perfect school or do you want a happy school? ……because happiness innately is imperfect.”

The world as we know it, is changing at a rapid pace.. more rapid than anyone could have imagined. Professionals in various work spaces are confronted with having to step out and step up, as not doing so might be more difficult than the status quo. Thus, organizations the world over are trying to impress upon their employees the concept of Continuing Professional Development or CPD. CPD is important because it ensures that one is professionally competent and stays relevant. It is an ongoing process and requires the active involvement of the individual.

However, it is important for school leaders to understand that merely participating in Professional Development programmes will not make a difference. The participants’ approach and mindset towards CPD is one of the vital elements that defines the value the programme will generate. Teachers who are happy working in their schools are found to be able to handle the stress related to work, better than those who are not, because happiness increases an individual’s resilience. According to the ‘broaden and build theory of positive emotions’ given by psychologist Barbara Fredrickson, positive emotions like joy, contentment and appreciation support the development of mindfulness, resilience, healthy relationships and also physical health. In other words, an enhanced HQ contributes to happier, more enabled and empowered teachers.

So, what is HQ ? …… Happiness Quotient (or HQ) refers to the satisfaction that people earn from their work, apart from the monetary remuneration they receive from it. It also extends to their spiritual, physical, social and environmental health. After working with a wide spectrum of schools in India and overseas, my humble observation is that the HQ of the teachers is directly proportional to their response towards CPD.

“Should I spend time in building mindfulness, resilience and healthy relationships in my school?”

If Yes, then let us reflect and challenge ourselves with some questions:

  1. Are my teachers happy working in my school?
  2. Are my teachers happy working with me?
  3. Do I share a deep bond with my teachers as their leader and mentor ?
  4. When was the last time I conducted an authentic & an unbiased assessment to find the happiness quotient of my teachers in school?
  5. Top 5 steps that I can do to increase the happiness quotient in my school
  6. Am I willing to learn from professionals, beyond my circle of influence, who have developed strong and healthy bonds with their team members?

The answers to these questions and action taken would definitely have a positive snowballing effect on the HQ of the teachers in your schools.
