The Teacher Foundation ushered in 2019 with a workshop ‘Doing Projects with Purpose’, in association with The People Archives in Rural India (PARI). This workshop was designed for high school teachers to enable them to design meaningful student projects that bridge the widening gap between an urban student’s life and rural lives and livelihood.

P Sainath, who conducted the workshop, is an eminent journalist and the founder editor of PARI. He is also a Ramon Magsaysay recipient and has published a book ‘Everybody Loves a Good Drought’ (Penguin India, 1996), now in its 43rd print.

Over 30 educators attended the workshop which was held at Aashirwad Centre, Bangalore on 9 January, 2019. The workshop highlighted the following:

  • The lopsided picture media presents of India, with little coverage and no understanding of the complexities of rural India.
  • Young students today feel disconnected from a vast majority of their fellow citizens.
  • The need for educators to make the effort to bring rural news into their classrooms by presenting the linkages between their lives and rural India.
  • Thereby contributing to building a more humane society with respect and acknowledgment of those who grow our food among other critical contributions.

Through the videos shot by the PARI team, Mr Sainath regaled the audience with heartwarming stories of rural India and the rich, cultural diversity that exists in the villages; and how each of these stories can be interwoven into the daily lessons in urban schools, making for great learning. PARI has a vast archive of videos, audios, stories and reports that can be used for this purpose.
